How does this actually work?
It's the classic phase-cancellation trick: most studio recordings mix the lead vocal identically and dead-center into both the left and right channels. Subtracting right from left cancels anything that's truly identical in both, which is usually the vocal, while instruments panned even slightly off-center survive.
Why does it need a stereo file?
This only works because there's a left and a right channel to compare. A mono file has no stereo difference to cancel, so there's nothing for this technique to remove.
Will this fully remove the vocals?
No, this is a rough karaoke pass, not true AI source separation. Reverb, backing vocals, or anything not perfectly centered will still be audible.
What does "Preserve bass" do?
Bass and kick drum are very often mixed dead-center too, so a plain full-band cancellation guts them right along with the vocal. With this on, everything below the cutoff frequency passes through untouched from the original mix, and only content above it gets cancelled, the same crossover trick real vocal-remover pedals and plugins use.
