What's the difference between manual gain and normalize?
Manual gain applies a fixed dB boost or cut to every sample. Normalize instead scales the whole file so its single loudest sample lands exactly at your target peak, useful when you don't know in advance how loud a file already is.
Will this clip or distort my audio?
Every sample is clamped to the valid range, so a heavy boost clips cleanly instead of wrapping into noise. It will still sound distorted if you push it too far, same as any volume boost.
What does the compressor do?
It automatically turns down anything louder than the threshold, by the ratio you set (4:1 means 4dB over the threshold comes out as 1dB over), then adds a flat makeup gain back on top. That evens out a recording with both quiet and loud parts, so the quiet parts don't get lost and the loud parts don't dominate.
What does the Tone control do?
It's a two-band bass/treble EQ, the same shape as the tone knobs on a real stereo: Bass boosts or cuts everything below about 250Hz, Treble boosts or cuts everything above about 4kHz, and the mid-range in between is left alone. Turn bass down and treble up for a thinner, brighter sound, or the reverse for something warmer and heavier.
