Both fades are scaled down proportionally so they never overlap into an audible dip in the middle of a short clip.
Which curve shape should I use?
Linear is the safe default. Exponential fades in slowly then rushes up, good for a fade-in that shouldn't call attention to itself early. Logarithmic is the opposite: quick to rise, then eases gently into full volume. S-curve eases both ends at once, the smoothest-sounding of the four with no abrupt change in slope at either boundary.
