Frequently asked

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate is roughly how many calories your body burns just to keep essential functions running (breathing, circulation, cell repair). Before any activity or exercise is counted.

Why does the calculator ask for sex?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation used here is sex-specific by formula design (there isn't a published gender-neutral variant) so it's required to compute an accurate estimate, not for any other purpose.

Why does BMR differ from other calculators I've used?

Several BMR formulas exist (Mifflin-St Jeor, Harris-Benedict, Katch-McArdle). This tool uses Mifflin-St Jeor, generally considered the most accurate for the modern population. Other tools using a different formula will give slightly different numbers.

Is this medical advice?
